A Philosophy

All of IT is built upon Semantics, whether we recognize it or not; all standards, all processes, all schemas, all designs - all of these constructs can be represented as Ontologies or Taxonomies. Semantic Integration recognizes this and the need to coordinate at IT at this atomic level.

A Methodology

SI allows us to link lifecycles, architecture tiers and organizations in a way never previously achieved. This methodology was borne out of experience on numerous global enterprise integration projects and is designed to complement SOA not replace it.

A Set of Technology Standards & Tools

Over the past ten years, a new generation of standards have arisen (both from the W3C and other groups) to help define the role of Semantics and Service Management - combined, these represent more than SOA and more than the Semantic Web - they provide us with a new paradigm to manage all of IT.

An "Integration Fabric"

Integration is more than the development of application and or data interfaces and in fact true integration was never meant to be a point to point exercise. Enterprise and cross-domain integration require the ability to allow us to control a federated set of capabilities using centralized or orchestrated mechanisms.

This is an Integration Fabric - a collection of logic and capabilities that can be described in context and managed en masse. Semantic Integration allows us for the first time to be able to merge such varied capabilities as BPEL, multiple EA frameworks, any number of relational data sources as well as any typical SOA Governance structure as one united entity.

Semantic Integration, while standards-based, provides us for the first time ever with a truly technology agnostic framework for managing the whole enterprise, not just pieces of it or specific programs or initiatives.
