Integration occurs at many levels in nature; the human body is an integrated collection of interdependent sub-systems and functions, which in turn must inhabit an integrated ecosystem filled with other integrated life-forms and inorganic elements and processes. Where does one start; at the quantum level, the molecular perspective through the lens of DNA or with more tangible subsystems such as circulation or respiration?

Believe it or not, IT faces the same dilemmas of where integration is occurring or needs to occur and similar scales of complexity. This is only fitting in proper; as the nature of IT either mimics the real world or creates its own virtual worlds using real world technology; built using the same scientific understanding we employ to determine everything from quantum-level interactions to cosmic relationships and synergies.

The IT industry has divided the Integration Lifecycle across a number of market segments, most of which have arisen around specific commercial software products. These market segments include; ERP, CRM, BI, EAI, ECM, portals, other middleware, integrated development environments (IDE’s), IDS and endpoint security, VOIP and so forth. This acronym soup is every bit as confusing for those I the IT industry as it for the layman. The myriad of techniques, software and supporting equipment all point to one thing – complexity. Complexity is precisely what integration is all about; taming it managing it and when necessary defeating it.
