Semantech Announces New Slogan for The Miami Valley

Feb. 20, 2008

Semantech Inc. is pleased to announce that it has produced an alternative branding slogan for the Miami Valley region. The official campaign managed by the Dayton Development Coalition to brand our area has been underway for two years; nearly two million dollars have been spent thusfar with perhaps $300,000 or more of that directed towards development of the slogan. We feel that everything associated with this initiative is contrary to the spirit of our region - it has taken too long, cost too much and the results are utterly ineffective.

The slogan that has resulted from the official campaign is this:

"Get Midwest: We Think of Everything - Dayton Region."

We believe it is ineffective for the following reasons:

  • It emphasizes the city of Dayton over the area (a 12 county region). The name of our local area, the one we thought was being promoted, is the "Miami Valley."
  • The focus on the "Midwest" makes little sense and is not compelling. If we only have one or two sentences to work with, they should convey something meaningful.
  • The "we think of everything" phrase comes across as either arrogant or trite.

This slogan does not reflect those traits which best exemplify our region - innovation, dedication and technical expertise. It should be abandoned in favor of a slogan and campaign that will properly highlight the Miami Valley and illustrate to outsiders why we believe our region is unique.

We feel that this issue is vital to the future of our region and for that reason we are offering an alternative branding campaign, free of charge to help correct what would likely become an embarrassment if continued. Our alternative slogan is this:

"Miami Valley USA: Birthplace of Innovation; Where Opportunity Takes Flight."

This slogan captures our proper regional context, our heritage and our vision for the future. We offer it in the spirit of hope for the future, that our region might begin to recapture the spark of imagination and discovery that we once possessed...
